Traveling west on Hwy 20, two of the National Guard Survival School helicopters (UH-1 aka hueys) go over, and further along \u00a0find them landed in a meadow along the highway. \u00a0They rotor up and lift before camera can be acquired. \u00a0This is the same type of helicopter used by the \u00a0Wisconsin National Guard in 1981, the same that landed atop \u00a0Sacred Heart following the<\/span> Ruby Ridge Incident<\/a> in 1992, and the same helicopters and group that \u00a0flew \u00a0 out of Bonners Ferry 1996 in extraction of injured firefighter.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

In Colville, where\u00a0RV battery testing \u00a0finds that, as \u00a0suspect, it is finished as a battery. \u00a0At Walmart, new RV\u00a0battery acquired only to find upon installation that there is still no power. \u00a0All the fuses are good. \u00a0This matter requires further investigation but it is getting late. \u00a0Stopping for gas enables a chance meeting\u00a0with “Matt” who is fueling a truck that has a large boat in tow. \u00a0The side of the boat has the word “RESEARCH”. \u00a0Matt has an accent that sounds Aussie. \u00a0He is part of a team who are working with the<\/span> Lake Roosevelt White Sturgeon Recovery Program<\/a>. \u00a0 \u00a0Currently they are checking numbers on the Lake. \u00a0On\u00a0to<\/span> Marcus Island\u00a0Campground<\/a>.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

The river is drawn down considerably as there is still snow sitting on the mountains north in BC. \u00a0Turkeys call back and forth in the campground and can be heard across the river as well. \u00a0I seem also to hear peacocks which may be coming from the farms on China Bend side of the river.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Very cold and uncomfortable night which I think is below freezing. \u00a0In the morning I sit in the sun caffeinating when a local walks past. \u00a0He turns out to be the only person I speak with during the next two days. \u00a0On the river two boats are visible. \u00a0He points to them and with emphasis and profanity observes that it is “our government wasting our tax money”. \u00a0I realize that one of the boats is “RESEARCH”. \u00a0I observe that these folks are involved with the sturgeon recovery. \u00a0This certainly does not change his opinion.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Marcus Island as a settlement was originally founded by Marcus Oppenheimer, who started a trading station in the late 1900s to provide services for miners heading to Alaska in the<\/span> Yukon Gold Rush<\/a>. \u00a0With the addition of the railway as a stop, Marcus (1909) grew to include a hospital. \u00a0In 1940, the entire town was relocated off the Island and unto the east shore as part of the Grand Coulee Dam construction. \u00a0With the water drawn so low, some of the original structures are exposed. \u00a0Later this month this will all be underwater again.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n
