April 30th:<\/span> \u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Today is windy with a chill early. \u00a0Crossing over the<\/span> Kettle Falls Bridge<\/a>\u00a0onto the<\/span> Sherman Pass Scenic Byway<\/a>\u00a0Hwy 20, but not long before heading south on Inchelium Kettle Falls Rd, to<\/span> Inchelium<\/a>, west on Bridge Creek Rd Hwy 2, over the San Poil, south on hwy 21 to the Manilla Creek Road, west and into<\/span> Grand Coulee <\/a>on 155.<\/span> \u00a0Then onto<\/span> Banks Lake<\/a> via<\/span> Barker Canyon<\/a>. \u00a0The pine forests melt away into a harsher dry desert with sage and crumbling cliffs of basalt. \u00a0This area seems so alien and bewildering with random grotesque shaped rocks that are appropriately called erratics. \u00a0The lake shore is clay and sand and piles of odd shaped clay pieces line the shore like scales. \u00a0The wires of Grand Coulee seem to add this sense of alien with hundreds of high tension lines supported by power poles that are reminiscent of<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0“transformers<\/a>“. \u00a0Tonight sleep in the sounds of coyote and owl.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

May 1st<\/strong>:<\/span> \u00a0<\/span>Agenda destination\u00a0<\/span>Moses Coulee<\/a> and<\/span> Jameson lake<\/a> which means back into Grand Coulee. \u00a0The<\/span>\u00a0Grand Coulee Dam Visitor Center<\/a>\u00a0at the foot of the dam an enthusiastic host educates on the variance in water levels including the\u00a0disturbing story of the avoidable flooding of<\/span> Vanport<\/a>.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

On the plateau between the Grand Coulee and Moses Coulee there is an old abandoned school house. \u00a0The\u00a0 360 degree view is\u00a0total isolation of other buildings. The school\u00a0seems to have escaped from the stark basalt walls and, between the coulees, \u00a0crawled to a stop.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

Coulee City<\/a>\u00a0 is at the west end of Banks Lake. \u00a0I drive through collecting more images that seem to have a theme consistent with the school house abandoned on the higher plateau.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

I see a snake stretched out and crossing \u00a0the dirt road that drops\u00a0back into Barker Canyon but am unable to avoid it\u00a0in time. \u00a0I park, grab the camera and walk back. \u00a0The serpent is still alive and easily identified as a viper even though it is not showing or rattling at first. \u00a0As the camera is produced the snake recoils itself and now is giving out a warning. \u00a0I give it plenty of space, capture some images and we part our ways.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

May 2nd:<\/span> Slow trip home passing or stopping at<\/span> Wilbur<\/a>, Hawk Creek<\/a>, Seven Bays<\/a>, Fort Spokane<\/a> and<\/span> Porcupine Bay<\/a>.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n
