The waking dream was about hummingbirds, or perhaps it was not a dream as the forest is quite populated. \u00a0Humming does not seem to be the right word, perhaps buzzing is closer.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

Scatter blasts of rhododendron color the road. \u00a0Regassing at Sedro-Wooley, a hummingbird feeder\u00a0is acquired to try to reproduce the waking dream state of the day. \u00a0A growing angst returns passing through frustrating\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Sedro-Wooley<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0pointing north along hwy 9. \u00a0Saxon<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>,\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Acme<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Welcome<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Maple Falls<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0This is clearly different sensation to be along the west side of Mount Baker. \u00a0Without the moss draped trees everything seems tame exception the gas mart where fathers purchasing beer six packs accompany children arms of salted or sugared gastric corruption. \u00a0Coffee thermos loaded and hwy 542 through<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Glacier<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>and into the\u00a0North Cascades National Park and north of Mount Baker to<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Hannegan Trail<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0With no other vehicles in site, a sunny stroll about the seemingly deserted cul de cedar but startled by ~ 30s red bearded packer. \u00a0At first immobile staring at the<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Nooksack Ridge<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>then turning states \u201cOh, I am just taking a rest\u201d. \u00a0Reminiscent of the acid burned brains from the Madison 70s. \u00a0 Within the hour the sun is gone and a dark sky rumbles closer, then drip, drop, sprinkle, shower, flashing cracking pouring rain.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Mergus merganser<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong>,<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>and<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Cathartis aura<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Then sun again. \u00a0Backpacker gone but must not be far. \u00a0Heavy mist on the Nooksack. \u00a0Just a short break with a quick return of the rumbles.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

New feeder, no buzzing. \u00a0No ferns, no moss. \u00a0Sun hike up the Hannegan Trail with views of waterfalls off the north ridge in the distance. \u00a0Occasionally ice and rock join the\u00a0fall, crashing in the cascades\u00a0bringing delayed sound across the valley. \u00a0Half mile along in a young grove, the red bearded hermit is seen sitting secluded silent draped in a large poncho that covers the pack. \u00a0No tent, no fire. \u00a0Turning he mumbles \u201cI am just taking a rest\u201d. \u00a0Again flashbacks of acid heads. \u00a0Trail gives \u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Mt Sefrit<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0look. \u00a0Later, descending passing the hermit yet unmoved.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

A\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>ruffed\u00a0grouse<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0hesitants \u00a0across the trail. \u00a0Bonasa umbellus. \u00a0Russ would be proud of me.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Later at dusk a helicopter approaches the valley unseen in the darkening. \u00a0The sound is unfamiliar but possibly a hughes 500 or an early bell. \u00a0The sound seems to stop abruptly perhaps landing at the overlook or gone behind the mountain.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n
