\"20151211_135750\"A fresh trip in winter, a fresh look over Columbia River where months earlier at this same overlook as a Sikorsky thumped through the smoke. \u00a0In Ellensburg under wet skies, an AtlasObscura reference, a stoppette<\/a><\/span>, the\u00a0curiosity of\u00a0Dick and Jane’s<\/a> art<\/span>.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

December 12th:<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n

A short walk about defines a drenching rain, but undaunted by VFR conditions, a visit to\u00a0Olympic Flight Museum<\/a><\/span>. The hanger is half full\u00a0for holiday events and, additionally, half empty while some of the aircraft are apparently at a film shoot. \u00a0A\u00a0reduced admission somewhat abates a karmic\u00a0disappointment. \u00a0The museum attendant follows through the hanger fueling conversation\u00a0with\u00a0a chatter of facts, trivia and air observations.\"20151212_133547_001\"<\/span> \u00a0Outside a forlorn Cobra, rotors drooped in precipitation peers west, perhaps in envy at a parked Airlift Northwest EC-135.

A departure from the Olympia Regional Airport, arrival at the Washington State Capitol<\/a> in Olympia. \u00a0Christmas carols echo in the rotunda while an ancestor of the First People dances to the music. \u00a0The chandelier is a Tiffany weighing 4500 kg. \u00a02001\u00a0Nisqually quake<\/span><\/a>\u00a0gave it a two week swing.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

December 13th:<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n

\"20151214_104909Traveling north along highway 101 on the Olympic Peninsula<\/a><\/span>\u00a0given scenes of art deco buildings, sea lions feeding in tributaries and convocations of eagles scavenging on the shorelines. \u00a0The once upon a boom \u00a0brick buildings of\u00a0Port Townsend<\/a><\/span>\u00a0are quaint reflections of that heyday.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

In the basement jailhouse of the Jefferson Museum of Art and History<\/a><\/span>\u00a0 an old newspaper story suggests that\u00a0Jack London spent the night incarcerated in these cells but as unsubstantiated, a furphy.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

\"20151214_110238\"At a public dock looking out at the Strait of Juan De Fuca, under a damping drizzle, the sea has a \u00a0sensual pull even in the gray.<\/em><\/span><\/span>
\nNoshing a bowl of clam chowder, distracted\u00a0and an\u00a0irresponsible deletion of the collection of the trip pictures to the day. \u00a0A disconnect and loss.<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

December 14th:<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n

Port Townsend to \u00a0Whidbey Island<\/a><\/span> via ferry<\/a>\u00a0arriving at Fort Casey State Park<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>where earthwork and silent guns guard Admiralty Bay.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

December 15th:<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n

Early to the Frye Museum<\/a><\/span>, a short walk to and into St. James Cathedral<\/a><\/span>. \u00a0While admiring the large pipe organ, it springs to resonant life with\u00a0pieces of music wrapping strains\u00a0and runs of notes into the ambient consciousness.\"20151215_103257\" \u00a0 \u00a0The Frye, whose walls seem bare with\u00a0\u00a0a tangible paucity of exhibit, pales in composition to the pipe musician’s practice.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Later the music continues with Postmodern Jukebox<\/a><\/span>\u00a0at the Showbox Sodo<\/a><\/span>. \u00a0The music is fusion and fun, and the venue is crowded, and the company is great, and the people sitting comfortably for 2 hours before the show, g noshing suddenly realize as the music begins, that they cannot see the band because of the crowd and a\u00a0pillar, and begin making comments about tall folks who they cannot see over, and someone gets bumped, and the sound system is not quite adapted to the unusual layout, and the tap dancer<\/a>\u00a0is outstanding, and, in the end it is\u00a0just lucky parking. \u00a0Never apologize for genetics. \u00a0Is a\u00a0GPS vengeful when it\u00a0does not\u00a0“get its way”?<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

December 16th:<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n

\"20151216_113254\"Vintage breakfast at Planet Java<\/a><\/span>\u00a0followed by a walk through bricks to the Seattle Art Museum<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0The outstanding exhibit,\u00a0Intimate Impressionism from the National Gallery of Art, features small works of the influential artists in this genre.<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

December 18th:<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n

Across Admiralty Bay<\/a><\/span>, to \u00a0“P.T.”, to Port Angeles<\/a><\/span>\u00a0with a walk about. \u00a0 A\u00a0steep stair climb to a north view across the Strait of Juan De Fuca, to the faint outlines of Victoria B.C. \u00a0\"20151218_114351_002\"At a dock a\u00a0former paramedic holds a fresh catch\u00a0of crabs who crawl over each other in the crowded bucket. \u00a0The Fiero Marine Museum holds an old cornered octopus immobile in glass, a\u00a0mobile\u00a0of whale bones hanging in a\u00a0hallway, and a few small\u00a0survivors of the Starfish Wasting Disease<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Port Angeles 2 Victoria Black Ball<\/a><\/span> Ferry is a 90 minute strait crossing to the border crossing. \u00a0Late afternoon light is additionally darkening with increasing precipitation\u00a0and finally from a few drops, a drizzle mists to a “drencher”. \u00a0At the Butchart Gardens<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>the sky clears allowing a waxing moon a lunar touch in the holiday lights. \u00a0Complimentary brollys are discarded along the footpaths.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

\u00a0\"20151218_171321\"Leashed Golden Era fascinates a\u00a0festive family also walking along lit botanical paths. \u00a0As if on cue with departure, the weather becomes caliginous and gradual escalaton to\u00a0rain restarts. \u00a0 Sooke, Sooke,\u00a0Sooke, B.C.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

\u00a0December 19th:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/h1>\n

\u00a0Unleashed Golden Era crazy runs as\u00a0the morning sun silhouettes inlet docked boats. \u00a0Off and on a breakfast bowl of oatmeal, on to the\u00a0\u00a0Royal BC Museum<\/a><\/span> and magical downtown Victoria. \u00a0Among the old bricks, the holiday shoppers, Mr. and Mrs. Claus, a girl fiddling balanced on a unicycle, an optical illusion penguin reaches\u00a0out a high flipper chalk greeting. \"20151219_125600a\"\u00a0On\u00a0the Inner harbor, the \u00a0Empress<\/a>\u00a0is reflected in the museum.\u00a0\u00a0Totems stoically stare at the ongoing renovations. \u00a0Focused information on climate change suggest dire rapid impact from which\u00a0the\u00a0\u00a0pacific northwest \u00a0flora and fauna\u00a0diorama is safely preserved.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

Another 90 minute ferry from Swartz to Tsawassen sailing\u00a0into Vancouver. \u00a0 A walk through\u00a0a\u00a0Festival of Lights\u00a0display at VanDuesen Botany Gardens<\/span><\/a> before checking into Pacific Inn Resort<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

December 20th:<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n

\"20151220_115900\"A Douglas DC 3 stands aside the runway, part of the aircraft collection at the Canadian Museum of Flight<\/a>. \u00a0Few of the aircraft are airworthy and many in abject disrepair.\"20151220_110934\" \u00a0Flight relics are parked outside in the rain or inside arranged only logically as a walk through. \u00a0Historical vignettes line the hanger walls featuring media articles, photos and the usual trinkets of personal history: \u00a0Dr. Jack Pickup<\/a>, who flew a Waco<\/a> to \u00a0visit patients, then donated this exquisite aircraft to the museum<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

\"20151220_124602\"Along the GPS guided route to the \u00a0Bloedel Conservatory,\u00a0\u00a0a\u00a0rare sighting of a herd of cranes standing along the highway. \u00a0In the domed botanical garden exotic birds revel with featured flora in the temperature controlled humidity.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

Onto the University of British Columbia<\/a>\u00a0campus and the Museum of Anthropology<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0There outdoor\u00a0Totems overlooking\u00a0the small pond watch indoor totems looking out to the Salish Sea. \u00a0\"20151220_152933\"A partial quote from the opuscule\u00a0Heart Sutra\u00a0explains an artists muse:<\/span><\/em>
\n“Form is emptiness, Emptiness is form,\u00a0Emptiness is not separate from form,\u00a0Form is not separate from Emptiness.” \u00a0a totem’s meditation.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

In a determination to complete the dance card bucket list, a drive through downtown Vancouver, into Stanley Park and over the historic \u00a0Lion’s Gate\u00a0Bridge<\/a>\u00a0destination\u00a0Capilano Suspension Bridge<\/a>. \u00a0Perhaps the heightened suspension of the Lion (previously known as First Narrows Bridge)\u00a0\u00a0over the English Bay is a boot camp preparation for the collywobbles of the Capilano. \u00a0Seasonal holiday lighting shadows the stairway cliff walk, the bouncing and swaying bridge and the tree walk. \u00a0Someone has taken their large dog through the walk and it looks like it could vomit and die of suspension any moment.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

December 21st:<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n

Yesterday, a tough act to follow, begins in Downtown Vancouver to breakfast at the Elbow Room Cafe<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>where the waiter inquires “Do you want some meat in your mouth this morning?” \u00a0 \u00a0Plans for a new building are on display in the lobby of the Art Gallery of Vancouver<\/a><\/span>. \u00a0The old building is as impressive as the exhibits<\/em><\/span>\"20151221_145058\"<\/h2>\n

Back to Stanley Park for a visit to the Vancouver Aquarium<\/a>. \u00a0There is something fishy about that place. \u00a0Outside the penguins, otters and belugas can be watched through inside glass.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

A final return to the downtown in search of the Art Deco MarineBuilding<\/a>.<\/span> \u00a0The building construction makes the building a museum in itself.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

December 22st:<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n

Initially in rain followed by a touch of snow, then sun in the drive through British Columbia, Manning Provincial Park, to Osoyoos then into “the states” to Oroville. \u00a0The road conditions, increasingly challenging on this long return to the snow berm drive which is home.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n
